Enrique Lamadrid collection on Juan B. Rael, 1930-1998.

The collection, assembled by Enrique Lamadrid, contains 36 Hispanic religious and secular songs recorded by Juan B. Rael (1930-1940). Recordings total approximately eight hours in length. The collection contains hymns, shepherd's plays, wedding songs and dance tunes. (valses, varsovianas, decimas, entregas de novios (entriegas), marchas, los pastores and las posadas), recorded at Cerro and Arroyo Hondo (New Mexico), and at Alamosa, Manassa and Antonito (Colorado). In 1998 Enrique Lamadrid re-engineered the original recordings, which are now on six CDs in the collection. The collection also contains copies of articles written by Rael, as well as materials created by Lamadrid, including his recording log, chronology of Hispanic music (1940-1997), Spanish transcriptions and English translations of Rael's songs and analysis of the genre, performers and terminology in the collection, as well as articles and documents about Rael, New Mexico folk music, society, traditions, Penitentes, and alabados. Additionally, the collection contains a recorded interview with Rael's niece, Glorianna Dominguez Atencio.
